Merge Inpatient Pediatrics

Merge for Inpatient Pediatrics Settings

Known in research and development as Alberta FICare, Merge represents a clinically validated, evidence-based model of care originally developed for neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The model's core innovation lies in its systematic integration of parents/caregivers as active members of their child’s healthcare team, empowering them to participate meaningfully in their child's care while receiving appropriate education and support.

Following a successful clinical trial and a real-world effectiveness study, Merge was adopted across all 14 Alberta NICUs, where it continues to demonstrate sustained benefits for newborns, families, and the health system. Given that many families of children admitted to inpatient pediatric units have previously experienced care in NICU settings and have become accustomed to family integrated care, there exists a natural progression and strong rationale for adapting and evaluating Merge for general pediatric inpatient settings. Ongoing research and development will adapt Merge to meet the unique needs of pediatric populations and their parents/caregivers while maintaining fidelity to the core principles that have proven effectiveness in NICUs.

The Merge modules adapted for inpatient pediatrics are expected to be available in early 2027.
